 THE GNOMES' GHOME..........29.Oct.2000

*  Festive ~ Oktober and a HAPPY HALLOWEEN  *
You can BUY this beautiful Holiday center piece@ BC CRAFTS Halloween:
Halloween's origins date back to the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain (pronounced sow-in). The Celts, who lived 2,000 years ago in the area that is now Ireland, the United Kingdom, and northern France, celebrated their new year on November 1. This day marked the end of summer and the harvest and the beginning of the dark, cold winter, a time of year that was often associated with human death. Celts believed that on the night before the new year, the boundary between the worlds of the living and the dead became blurred. On the night of October 31, they celebrated Samhain, when it was believed that the ghosts of the dead returned to earth. In addition to causing trouble and damaging crops, Celts thought that the presence of the otherworldly spirits made it easier for the Druids, or Celtic priests, to make predictions about the future. For a people entirely dependent on the volatile natural world, these prophecies were an important source of comfort and direction during the long, dark winter. More.......

The Forked Pine Ranch: Back in September we had the opportunity to visit a couple of my dearest friends, Jim and Lynnie Morgan, at the Forked Pine Ranch, in Delagua, Colorado. Originally from the Great State of Texas, they ventured to Colorado quite a few years ago~and we're glad they did! Their ranch sports many varieties of wildlife: cows~horses~Barbados-Sheep~chickens~rabbits~peacocks~deer~coyotes~bear and what ever else happens to pass through. We had the pleasure, recently, of an old fashioned buggy ride! Jim was was giving us some last minute instructions and I was looking for the EJECT button! Phillie-bee(hope I spelled her name right, Lynnie) was doin' all the work. As usual, the day ends up with us gettin' a real good home cooked meal~and we don't never turn down Lynnie's cookin'! The Trinidad Labor Day Parade, was honored this year by Phillie-bee sporting Lynnie and the buggy!!
Next issue we'll have our Huntin' adventure for ya!!

Talk About Dumb.... Longview, Texas: Car Phone
A Texas woman's car, along with her cellular phone, were stolen. Upset, the woman went into the local police station and reported the crime. The police officer called the woman's cellular phone number, when the woman heard her distinctive ring just a few feet away. The brilliant criminal had answered the phone while standing in line at the police station to pay a parking ticket. The woman identified the phone and the thief was immediately arrested.

Borne of rowdy miners...
...with silver in their blood, Park City's turn-of-the-century character is alive and well. You can see it in the Victorian homes, in the Old Miners Hospital, now a community center in City Park, and in the fascinating Park City Museum on Main Street. A simple stroll down historic Main Street is all it takes to bring back the romance of the Old West. It hasn't been that long since dance hall girls and raucous saloons populated Park City. Spend a night on the town and you'll see what we mean.

More GORE & CLINTON: OUR PERFIDIOUS PRESS:
How The Media Falsify The Record
"Scholar" Clinton, "Soldier" Gore

One rumor the mainstream newsies won't be reporting concerns Al Gore's military service in Vietnam. A "former staffer" for Gore's father, then Sen. Albert Gore of Tennessee, informed C-SPAN Friday morning that young Al had decided to flee to Canada rather than serve in Vietnam, but was persuaded by his father to do his stint in the Army. He was given assurances that if he volunteered for Vietnam his father's powerful political friends would see to it that he did not get a combat assignment and would not be injured in any way. If a report that appeared on the Free Republic Web site the same day is correct, the politicians were as good as their word -- his father, a prominent Democrat, hired bodyguards to make sure that not a hair on junior's head was harmed while he served out his five-month hitch as a military journalist far from the front. (Come to think of it, how many grunts were in Vietnam for only five months -- apart from those who were killed or wounded?) Why mention such a rumor if it hasn't been confirmed? Well, those left-liberal Clinton supporters who masquerade as the Washington press corps could ask Al about it, couldn't they? After all, they have been quick enough to ask GOP candidates about far-fetched stories dreamed up by jail-birds. MORE........

Readers Views/Comments:
Hello,
I just surfed into your site and am enjoying it very much. I was going to write and ask that you review our site for possible placement on your site, but more importantly keep speaking the truth as in the case of your "ACCOMPLICES IN MURDER" link.

Far to many people believe that by turning their back and saying its a personal choice, they are not associated with the abortion murder industry. I firmly believe that on judgment day we will be asked what we did to protect the children.

Thanks,
Curtis K.

What Can I Take for a Cold?:
Though it's usually better to avoid using any drugs -- either prescription or over-the-counter -- during pregnancy, in some cases the health of the mother has to take precedence over any small risk to the baby. Acetaminophen is a pain reliever and fever reducer. Though it does cross the placenta, there have been no reports of fetal harm, and it's considered perfectly safe to use during pregnancy. If you'd like to forgo using this drug, try a warm bath to relieve aches and pains. If you're running a fever, dress lightly and be sure to drink plenty of fluids. For a very high fever, it's better to try to bring it down with acetaminophen or a cool bath. If your fever climbs to 102 degrees Fahrenheit, call your doctor.
NOTE: Always Check with and follow the advice of your Physician!

Does your baby have an ear infection?:
It can be difficult to tell, but if your child has a cold and then gets a fever about three to five days later, she may have an ear infection. She may also tug at her ear or be out of sorts. Sucking and swallowing can also hurt, so if your baby starts to eat and then pulls away from your breast or a bottle, seemingly in pain, and she also has any of the above symptoms, call your pediatrician. Treatment with antibiotics--usually amoxicillin--will wipe out the invaders, but her body may take up to three months to reabsorb the fluid. Fluid alone may not require medical attention, but if your child has the symptoms of an ear infection, such as a fever, you should check with your healthcare professional right away.
NOTE! Always check with and follow the advice of your physician!!

CRANBERRY NUT BREAD:
The tart berries, the crunchy nuts, the hint of orange, combine in an irresistible way. Serves 12. Don't worry about the calories~if ya like it~Eat IT!!

This recipe uses orange rind, so this is a good place to put in a good word for citrus oils. If you don't like the time, expense, and scraped knuckles involved in removing the zest (outer rind) from lemons and oranges, I suggest you buy bottles of orange and lemon oil. This strongly flavored oil is contained in the outer peel of fruit, and it's what you're really after when you add the outer rind to a recipe. An eighth of a teaspoon of lemon oil or a quarter teaspoon of orange oil equals an entire fruit's worth of zest, so a little bottle lasts a long time. You can find the oil in the King Arthur Flour catalog or Web site located at:http://www.kingarthurflour.com
It's also available at gourmet food stores.

  • 2 cups flour
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1-1/2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 3/4 cup orange juice, at room temperature
  • 1 tablespoon grated orange rind (or 1/4 teaspoon orange oil)
  • 1 egg, well beaten, at room temperature
  • 1/4 cup vegetable shortening, melted
  • 2 cups cranberries, coarsely chopped
  • 1/2 cup chopped walnuts
Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Grease one 9-inch or two 8-inch loaf pans.

Sift together flour, sugar, baking powder, baking soda, and salt. Combine orange juice, rind, egg, and shortening.

Add orange juice mixture to flour mixture; stir just until all dry ingredients are moistened. Gently fold in cranberries and nuts. Spoon into prepared pans; bake 50 to 60 minutes, until a tester inserted in the center comes out clean.

So until next time, REMEMBER:  Not getting what you want is sometimes a wonderful stroke of luck....
