Snow Adventure: EVER TRIED SKIJORING?...me neither
Skijoring is dog-assisted cross-country skiing. You strap on your cross-country skis, hitch yourself to your (big) dog, and set off over the snow. You ski to assist the dog on flats and ascents, and brake to keep from running it over on the downhills(hoboy....I can see where this is going..."LOOKOUT DOG..."). I've never seen anyone do this, but skijoring is apparently a lot of fun--even for the dog, which presumably is of a working breed that likes to pull and is well cared for. Skijorist John Harris has published some information on the sport, emphasizing skijoring in the Minneapolis and Duluth areas of Minnesota:
He's also posted a skijoring FAQ:

The Best Exercise for Pregnant Women:
One of the best cardiovascular exercises for pregnant women, walking keeps you fit without jarring your knees and ankles. It's also a safe activity throughout the nine months of pregnancy and one of the easier ways to start exercising if you haven't been. If you've been walking, keep it up. If you were fairly inactive before you became pregnant, start with a slow walk and build yourself up to brisk 20- to 30-minute jaunts. According to the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology, it's best to exercise at least three times a week. Working out sporadically can put you at risk for injury; plus, you don't benefit from exercise by working out only once in a while.
NOTE: Always follow the advice of your Physician!
Read to Your Baby:
It's never too early to start reading to your baby. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends reading aloud daily to your child starting at six months — when your child will really begin to enjoy looking at books with you. But Jim Trelease, long-time read-aloud expert and author of the The Read Aloud Handbook, says newborns will enjoy a good book, too. Most experts say that the more you speak directly to your child, the better for his growth and development. No matter what your child's age, reading provides an opportunity for cuddling and socializing that both baby and parent can appreciate.

 MOUNTAINGNOME's GRUB SHOPPE

PIQUANT HUNGARIAN GOULASH ::
This recipe uses a number of spicy and tangy ingredients plus a long, slow cooking time to impart plenty of flavor and tenderize the beef. Add more paprika if you'd like to pep things up. Top with a dollop of sour cream. Serves 4-6.

  • 1 lb beef, cubed
  • 2 med onions, minced
  • 1/4 tsp dry mustard
  • 1-1/4 tsp paprika
  • 2 tbsp brown sugar
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 2 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 3/4 tsp cider vinegar
  • 6 tbsp ketchup
  • 1-1/2 c water
  • 3 tbsp flour
  • 1 6-oz pkg noodles
In a large saucepan or Dutch oven, brown meat; add onion. Combine mustard, paprika, brown sugar, and salt. Combine Worcestershire sauce, vinegar, and ketchup; add to mustard mixture. Add to meat, with 1 cup water. Bring to a boil; cover and simmer 2-1/2 hours, stirring occasionally.

Blend flour with 1/2 cup water. Add to meat mixture and stir until thickened. Boil noodles in salted water according to package directions. Serve meat mixture over noodles.

So until next week, REMEMBER: "I've learned- that you can do something in an instant that will give you heartache for life."
