Talk About Dumb..
I was in a car dealership a while ago, when a large motor home was towed into the garage. The front of the vehicle was in dire need of repair and the whole thing generally looked like an extra in "Twister". I asked the manager what had happened. He told me that the driver had set the "cruise control" and then went in the back to make a sandwich.(The lock needs to be on the ignition switch, not the trigger!)

Outdoor Adventure: :MINORS TRAVELING TO MEXICO
One sentence from the State Department can create a huge headache for a parent traveling alone with their brood to Mexico: "Minors require notarized consent from parent(s) if traveling alone, with one parent, or in someone else's custody." This regulation, hatched from kidnapping problems that occur in custody wars, can keep a minor from entering Mexico if traveling with a guardian or even just with one parent. The regulation is enforced, although spottily, so traveling without a notarized statement is risky. Obviously, the provision brings up special difficulties for single parents with sole custody, and for widows and widowers. Those in the latter category should carry some official proof of their status as sole guardians. For more information, visit the State Department's Mexico Consular Information Sheet at http://travel.state.gov/mexico.html

Subject: Warning: McDonalds play area, Please Read
My name is Lauren Archer, my son Kevin and I lived in Midrand..
On October 2, 1999 I took my only son to McDonald's for his 3rd birthday. After he finished lunch, I allowed him to play in the ball pit..
When he started whining later on, I asked him what was wrong, he pointed to the back of his pull-up and simply said "Mommy, it hurts." But I couldn't find anything wrong with him at that time.. I bathed him when we got home, and it was at that point when I found a welt on his left buttock. Upon investigating, it seemed as if there was something like a splinter under the welt. I made an appointment to have it taken out the next day, but soon he started vomiting and shaking, then his eyes rolled back into his head. From there, we went to the emergency room. He died later that night. It turned out that the welt on his buttock was the tip of a hypodermic needle that had broken off inside.. The autopsy revealed that Kevin had died from heroine overdose.. The next week, the police removed the balls from the ball pit and lo and behold.. There was rotten food, several hypodermic needles: some full; some used; knives, half-eaten candy, diapers, feces, and the stench of urine..
If a child is not safe in a child's play area then where? You can find the article on Kevin Archer in the October 10, 1999 issue of the Midrand Chronicle..
We could not verify this article....however, no matter where your child plays, always take precautions!

TIPS FOR: Moms-To-Be & New Moms

It's Fun! It's Free - 'Today's Kids Magazine!':
Announcing the Official Magazine of Today's Kids. It's filled with fun stuff and fascinating information about toys. What's more, it's free! Their magazine, and its price, are sure to make you smile.

But What Do They Do? :
You know you're supposed to take a prenatal supplement, but did you know, for instance, why potassium benefits your baby? It aids muscle activity and contractions, energy metabolism, and nerve function for the fetus. And what about magnesium? It helps build strong bones and teeth, regulates insulin and blood-sugar levels, and builds and repairs tissue.
NOTE: Always follow the advice of your Physician!
Keep Bathrooms Safe for Your Baby:
Hardly a safe, warm haven, a bathroom can be a danger zone for a baby. Keep him out of mischief -- and potential harm's way -- by installing a hook-and-eye lock high up on the door and keeping it latched when no one's using the bathroom. For bath time, place a non-slip mat in the tub to cushion falls. Accidents do happen, so be prepared!

"Education is an admirable thing, but it is well to remember from time to time that nothing worth knowing can be taught." - by: Oscar Wilde

FINDING MILITARY RECORDS ABOUT OLD NORTHWEST AND SOUTHWEST INDIAN WARS: The Indian Wars of 1783-1796 involved many of our ancestors. The war in the Pacific Northwest was fought mostly between American settlers of the Old Northwest Territory and the Indian Nations that were allied with Loyalists and Great Britain. This war ended under the Treaty of Greenville in 1795.
In the Southwest, the war was fought mostly between American settlers of the Southwest Territory of Tennessee and the Indian Nations that were allied with Spain. This war ended under the Treaty of Colerain in 1796.
An interesting Web site that tells of the archaeological excavation of one of the battlefield sites is located at

LEMON MERINGUE PIE:
Lemon meringue pie is, of course, a classic of family dinners and potlucks. Watch carefully when you're baking the meringue to be sure it doesn't get too brown. Note that the grated lemon peel is optional; some people prefer not to have little chewy bits of rind in their otherwise smooth lemon custard.

  • 1/4 cup cornstarch
  • 2 tablespoons flour
  • 1-1/3 cups sugar
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1-1/2 cups boiling water
  • 3 egg yolks
  • 3 tablespoons cold butter
  • 1/2 to 3/4 teaspoon grated lemon rind (optional)
  • 1/3 cup lemon juice
  • one baked pie shell, cooled
    Meringue:
  • 3 egg whites
  • Dash salt
  • 1/3 cup sugar
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
Preheat oven to 350 degrees.

Blend cornstarch, flour, sugar, and salt in saucepan. Stir in boiling water. Place over direct heat; stir constantly until clear, about three minutes.

In a small bowl, beat egg yolks; stir in one-third of sugar mixture. Add yolk mixture to saucepan; cook two minutes. Remove from heat. Gradually stir in butter, lemon rind, and lemon juice. Pour into pie shell.

Meringue: Beat egg whites and salt until just stiff. Gradually add 1/3 cup sugar. Spread on top of pie; sprinkle one teaspoon sugar over top. Bake 12 to 15 minutes, until set and lightly browned.

So until next time, REMEMBER:  "The major cause of auto wrecks is a screw loose in the nut behind the wheel."
