Active Trades.........by: Bob Jones    Wed. 30 May 2000

Davis Station Antarctica:
Greetings from Davis.
The carpenters are painting the workshops; the mechanics are servicing the Hagglunds and the other trades are conducting stocktakes and writing monthly reports. The Comms section continue with the installation and trials of the new ANARESAT Vista replacement equipment, in preparation for the initiation of the service with Telstra on Friday. Dr Rob Sharp conducted the third series of medical first aid courses to an interested audience. This course covered injections, mixing drugs and canulations. The content and tuition were both excellent.

On Saturday Mick Briscoe prepared one of his Adelie Room dinners with Jack Gilbert and Bob Jones suitably dressed as waiters, serving at the tables. Jack bounced back the next day as Sunday cook serving excellent Mexican cuisine which was enjoyed by all.

Last Thursday Darren Harpur organised Davis' participation in the Cancer Foundations "Australia's Biggest Morning Tea". We donated some money to their cause and dressed in our yellow ventiles as yellow is the Cancer Foundation's colour and they requested some digital photos.

We had a big blizzard on Tuesday with a very sharp drop in the barometer reading and a temperature soaring to minus 31C. The sea-ice is now covered with thick snow prompting aggressive driving from quad users. Big blizz tails cover the access roads to many buildings. Wednesday's Icy FM was a mixed compilation of Nat King Cole, Frank Sinatra and Australian Bird songs DJ'd by slushy Peter Thompson.

Talk About Dumb..
Kentucky:
Two men tried to pull the front off a cash machine by running a chain from the machine to the bumper of their pickup truck. Instead of pulling the front panel off the machine, though, they pulled the bumper off their truck. Scared, they left the scene and drove home. With the chain still attached to the machine. With their bumper still attached to the chain. With their vehicle's license plate still attached to the bumper.

 SURFING THE OUTDOORS

Ridin' the Rails: Western Maryland RR...Mountain Thunder:
Mountain Thunder is more than a nickname! It's the perfect way to describe the experience offered by the Western Maryland Scenic Railroad! Our restored early 20th century rolling stock, steams through the mountains of Western Maryland on a stunning 32 mile round trip between Cumberland and Frostburg, from May through December. The trip covers a 1,300 foot change in elevation. You'll see tunnels and bridges and catch glimpses of scenery hidden for decades. More than three hundred years of American history are tied together by a ribbon of steel that thrills riders of all ages.
Happy Railroadin' Partners.....have fun and enjoy!!! No better way to enjoy wildlife....nature....and just down right relaxin'!
  • Don't worry about people stealing your ideas. If your ideas are that good, you'll have to ram them down people's throats.
Outdoor Adventure: Trinchera, Colorado:
Folks, this week me and the crew take ya for a tour of the Eastern plains of Colorado! Trinchera is only a few miles from the northern border of New Mexico. It's pretty hot in the summer, but the beautiful views of the Mesa's are great! Nearby are the towns of Trinidad and Branson. A word of caution when traveling this area: have a map, a full tank of gas, plenty of fluids....it's desolate but beautiful.
  • War doesn't determine who's right but who's left.
Summer Adventure: 4 Wheeling Off-Road!
The Central Pennsylvania Off-Road Park is a place where trail riding enthusiasts can legally enjoy themselves in the majestic mountains of central Pennsylvania. The park is located just outside the small city of Altoona where you can easily find hotel accommodations, restaurants, and auto parts stores on every corner. All types of vehicles are welcome from highly modified off-road machines to stock four wheel drives. The park is "pay to play" and consists of over 900 acres of tight, rocky terrain varying in difficulty from simple dirt trails to hard-core rock crawling. In the past year, land owner Dave Walls and several other local 4-wheelers have slowly cut the mountainsides into a maze of some of the most difficult terrain on the East Coast. If you're looking for a real challenge, a few of the trails have been conquered by only a few vehicles so far. With the land now spotted with small camping areas, you and your group or club can spend the weekend exploring all the park has to offer. Highly equipped and highly experienced trail leaders will be provided to guide you through the many perils found throughout the trails. New trails are continually being cut; not to mention the existing trails seem to vary daily so return visits are always welcome.
Survival Tip:Be prepared for your chosen recreation:
Being fit enough to go the distance takes physical preparation. Stick to your turnaround time (a general rule of thumb is to allow one thrid of your time for the trip in, and two thirds for the return trip). Take the proper equipment, have a trip plan, use maps, and reference/guide books.
Until next time: Be Safe ~ Be Happy!!

 MOUNTAINGNOME KOOL SITE

LOOKITSA:
Look, in the sky... it's a bird, no a plane, it's Superman... or maybe that was just a cloud shaped like Superman. This site is devoted to empowering your imagination with clouds. For children, clouds are magical and inspirational. Where a cloud might cause an adult to start imagining muddy footprints on the new living room carpet, a child might envision a dragon. This site is an invitation to daydream, and you don't even need to be near a window. It features dozens of photos of cloud formations, with new selections added each week. Click on a tiny cloud photo and it blows up to full screen proportions, complete with commentary by the person who submitted it. There's even a Grow Your Own Cloud kit, but we don't recommend it. There's just no substitute for the real thing!

Major Solar Storm Detected
(AP) - Scientists have detected a major solar flare erupting on the sun that could buffet Earth with a geomagnetic storm in the next two days. The blast of charged solar particles already is producing scattered radio blackouts but is not expected to significantly disrupt telecommunications or electrical power. It might generate a dramatic light show for midnight stargazers in the northern latitudes until early Saturday.

Pamper Your Pregnant Skin:
The same pregnancy hormones that put your emotions in an uproar can wreak havoc on your skin. Your complexion may look great, with that much-touted "pregnancy glow," or it may become drier than usual and splotchy. A good moisturizer can work wonders on your expanding belly or anywhere your skin feels dry. And who knows? It may even diminish stretch marks. While experts say they don't work, moms who've come through pregnancy stretch-free swear by them.
NOTE: Always follow the advice of your Physician!

Babies and Aspirin Don't Mix:
Never give your baby medications containing aspirin. Aspirin can make children susceptible to Reye's syndrome -- a rare but potentially fatal illness. Don't assume that the children's medicines you find in the store will be aspirin-free. Read the label carefully to make sure.
NOTE! Always check with and follow the advice of your physician!!

 MOUNTAINGNOMES' FAMILY TREE NEWS

RECORDS FOR LOYALISTS:
During America's early years, people were referred to as loyalists if they were loyal to the King (or Queen) of England. Often the loyalists were members of the military, serving in the Americas. You can find records for these people on both sides of the ocean. Look for census, tax, land, and military records. To learn how to search military records in England, go to:http://www.rootsweb.com/~genclass/201/gen201.htm
Go to the England Genealogy Class. There's a lesson specifically on military records.

 MOUNTAINGNOME's GRUB SHOPPE

RASPBERRY BAVARIAN PIE:
This pie is great for any occasion from a family picnic to a party. It isn't difficult to make and tastes like it came from an expensive bakery. You can add some whole raspberries when you fold in the whipped cream. Serves 12. "You don't wanna know the calories....just enjoy!"

    Pastry:
  • 1/3 cup butter
  • 2-1/2 tablespoons sugar
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 egg yolk
  • 1 cup flour
  • 1/2 cup finely chopped almonds

    Filling:

  • 10 ounces frozen raspberries, partially thawed and drained
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 2 egg whites
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 1/4 teaspoon vanilla
  • 1/4 teaspoon almond extract
  • 1/8 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup whipping cream
Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Grease a 10-inch pie pan. Cream butter, sugar, and salt until fluffy; add egg yolk and beat thoroughly. Mix in flour and almonds. Press mixture into prepared pie pan. Bake 12 minutes; cool.

Place all ingredients for filling, except cream, in a large bowl. Beat with electric mixer until mixture thickens and expands in volume, 10 to 15 minutes. Whip cream; fold into raspberry mixture. Pile into pastry; freeze at least eight hours. Remove from refrigerator 1/2 hour to an hour before serving.
