A FRIEND IS GONE:
It was a pretty sad event last saturday, 06/22/2002. Our trusted dog and longtime friend Mac died from unknown injuries.
Mac, was my youngest sons', companion, buddy and friend. He was very loyal to Jonathan. Wherever you
saw Jonathan, Mac was by his side. Mac was not the prettiest dog, nor was he a purebred, he was
just plain loyal, gentle and loving. He loved attention...... He will be missed.

America~A Bygone Era: The Explorers
Major John Wesley Powell
If you were hanging by only your left hand, 600 feet up the face of an Arizona cliff, what
would run through your mind?
If you were explorer Major John Wesley Powell in the year 1869, you just might wish that
you hadn’t lost your right arm in a Civil War battle. And as you clung for your life one-
handed on this cliff face in the far north of the Arizona Territory, you might recall how
you’ve struggled to overcome your lifelong fear of heights. And you might be grateful
when your fellow explorer George Bradley, above you on the cliff, takes off his pants and
dangles them down to you, so you can grab hold and be hauled to safety. But then again,
if you really were Major John Wesley Powell, you just might be gazing down the long
expanse to the Colorado River below, admiring the view of this place you’ve named the
Grand Canyon.
Arizona has seen many explorers and adventurers, but none as uniquely daring as Maj.
Powell. With four tiny boats, ten months’ worth of provisions, and a nine-man crew, he
set out to chart the course of the upper Colorado and Green Rivers. Navigating this
treacherous terrain required not only courageous river travel, but also periodic cliff scaling
to scope out the view ahead. No modern people had yet successfully traveled and
recorded this wild landscape. The rivers were studded with boulders, rapids, whirlpools,
and waterfalls, which often made river journeys fatal. The rivers’ routes were a five-
hundred-mile-long blank spot on the map. The story of Powell’s expedition is a tale of
danger and excitement that makes Hollywood adventure films look like child’s play. This
was a cliff-hanger on real cliffs.
Powell called the rock formations he found in the Grand Canyon the library of the gods,
and he read the layers like a geologic history book. The ascending chapters of that book
tell a story that began two billion years ago, nearly half of the Earth’s geologic history
and continues today. The layers of lava, sand, shale, limestone, and sandstone recorded
the area’s history through hundreds of millions of years as it changed from deserts to
swamps to seas to mountains to volcanoes.
Arizona’s Grand Canyon began forming around forty million years ago, when the Colorado
River began flowing westward across the Kaibab Plateau, cutting deep into ancient rock
layers. Widened by erosion from rain, ice, and wind, the canyon gradually grew to the
astonishing proportions that visitors to its rims and riverbeds see today. Throughout its 217
mile length, the canyon ranges from 4 to 18 miles wide. Visitors at the bottom can look up
and see the cliff tops a full mile above them.
Powell and his men were by no means the first people to set foot deep inside the Grand
Canyon. Many people had previously called the vast canyon home. Several Native
American cultures had lived in the Colorado River basin, flourished, and then died out,
one as early as 1000 B.C. Around 800 A.D., the Anasazi people built brilliantly engineered
apartment-style houses in the cliffs hundreds of feet above the riverbed.
All the major Grand Canyon landmarks received their modern day names from Powell and
his crew. Flaming Gorge got its name for its blazing red and orange, twelve-hundred-
foot-high walls. Disaster Falls was named to commemorate the site of a previous
explorer’s wreck. Marble Canyon got its name from its thousand-foot-thick seam of marble
and for its walls eroded to a polished glass finish.
Today, Arizona’s Grand Canyon is one of the world’s premier tourist destinations. Filled
with beauty, history, and drama, this ancient site attracts people from around the globe,
who come to appreciate the spirit of the canyon and the courage of the men who
charted it.
YES....IT'S REALLY FACT
From 1903 to 1913, the New York Yankees were known as the New York
Highlanders because their park, at 168th Street and
Broadway, was one of the highest spots in Manhattan. The
field was known as Hilltop Park.
Bonus points: If you said the original name of the team was
the Baltimore Orioles. In 1903 Frank Farrell and Bill
Devery purchased the defunct Baltimore Orioles franchise of
the American League (for a mere $18,000) and moved the team
to New York.

Sermon:
A minister told his congregation, 'Next week I plan to
preach about the sin of lying.
To help you understand my sermon, I want you all to
read Mark 17.'
The following Sunday, as he prepared to deliver his
sermon, the minister asked for a show of hands.
He wanted to know how many had read Mark 17.
All hands went up.
The minister smiled and said, 'Mark has only
sixteen chapters. I will now proceed with my
sermon on the sin of lying.'

Outdoor Adventure: OLD MINES
Custer County, Idaho:
Washington Basin
Aside from the numerous mines in Washington Basin, it is the
beautiful mountain scenery that makes the basin worthy of a visit.
The landscape is some of Idaho’s prettiest. The road into the basin
is at best a pickup truck road and a four-wheel drive road at its worst.
One cannot help but wonder how boilers and other heavy equipment
ever made it into such a remote area. Much of it still remains scattered
throughout the basin.

Steamboat not experiencing major effects from fires
*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*
Things in Steamboat Springs are looking fairly normal for this time of year.
Colorado, including Steamboat, is experiencing very dry conditions, but
Steamboat's landscape is still looking quite lush. The trees are adorned
with fresh green leaves, the mountainsides are green with grass, wildflowers
dot the landscape and sparkling water flows down the rivers.
News about Colorado's wildfires is toping the headlines in newspapers,
but those fires are only affecting about 1 percent of Colorado's total acerage.
More than 99 percent of Colorado's forestland has not been impacted by the fires, Steamboat Springs included.

Outdoor Tip: How Fish Position Themselves
A bass is a predator fish who eats out of instinct, not
always out of hunger. When the sun is out with no clouds in
sight, a bass will hold tight to cover. On cloudy days,
bass will roam. With this in mind, you should be able to
alter your techniques to help you catch more fish.

SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) - In the seven months since the passage of a sweeping law to combat terrorism,

Article Submitted by: Helen Pesho ~ Sausalito, Ca.
IF I KNEW:
If I knew it would be the last time
That I'd see you fall asleep,
I would tuck you in more tightly
and pray the Lord, your soul to keep.
If I knew it would be the last time
that I see you walk out the door,
I would give you a hug and kiss
and call you back for one more.
If I knew it would be the last time
I'd hear your voice lifted up in praise,
I would video tape each action and word,
so I could play them back day after day.
If I knew it would be the last time,
I could spare an extra minute
to stop and say "I love you,"
instead of assuming you would KNOW I do.
If I knew it would be the last time
I would be there to share your day,
Well I'm sure you'll have so many more,
so I can let just this one slip away.
For surely there's always tomorrow
to make up for an oversight,
and we always get a second chance
to make everything just right.
There will always be another day
to say "I love you,"
And certainly there's another chance
to say our "Anything I can do?"
But just in case I might be wrong,
and today is all I get,
I'd like to say how much I love you
and I hope we never forget.
Tomorrow is not promised to anyone,
young or old alike,
And today may be the last chance
you get to hold your loved one tight.
So if you're waiting for tomorrow,
why not do it today?
For if tomorrow never comes,
you'll surely regret the day,
That you didn't take that extra time
for a smile, a hug, or a kiss
and you were too busy to grant someone,
what turned out to be their one last wish.
So hold your loved ones close today,
and whisper in their ear,
Tell them how much you love them
and that you'll always hold them dear
Take time to say "I'm sorry,"
"Please forgive me," "Thank you," or "It's okay."
And if tomorrow never comes,
you'll have no regrets about today.
Thanks Helen, we all should know by now, how sadly true this is........
TIPS FOR MEN ~ WOMEN and BABIES |
GUYS: That First Trip To The Beach:
Do you have snow-blind legs? Are your thighs so white that
you may in fact blind babes at the beach?
Before that first trip to the shore, get a little color on
those calves. The best way isn't the tanning bed. You can
get burned. And you can increase your chances of developing
skin cancer.
The safe way to turn your legs, and arms, brown is with a
tanning cream. Apply a thin layer evenly to clean, dry skin
and let the cream do what the sun normally does.
