It's often difficult to find sites that provide technical information for children. One that we recently happened across provides information on a children's level about computers, programming, the Internet, video games, and much more. You should make sure your kids check out the information on Internet safety.

Finally, there are some online games that many children enjoy.

The site is called KidsClick! You'll find it by clicking here: http://www.kidsclick.com

GREAT HOLIDAY READING
Folks, here are some great books to read, while sitting by that warm fire in the evening........

December Twenty-Fifth: The Joy of Christmas Past
Phillip V. Snyder

"Let's have a good old fashioned Christmas this year" is the wistful refrain so often heard as the holiday season approaches. But just what is an old-fashioned Christmas? Surprisingly few people know. One who does and who knows, as well, all the stories behind our popular Christmas customs, is the author of this book. December 25th is his nostalgic, loving portrait of Christmases past and of the transformation of an ancient and still beloved religious festival into America's favorite holiday.

Christmas trees, Christmas stockings and decorations, Christmas shopping, gifts, and cards, carols, Yuletide food and drink - all our cherished traditions were largely unknown before the 1850's. The Christmas we celebrate today is mainly a creation of the Victorian period, and it is this period that December 25th recreates. It is full of fascinating and little-known facts and details and is a unique social history of Christmas in America.

Buy Today...Great Reading!! Rocky Mountain Christmas: Yuletide Stories of the West
by John H. Monnett
By evening everyone present agreed that the Christmas festivities were "the greatest known to that date" in the entire Taos region and Kit Carson was "chief over it all." For the first time in recent memory, different races and Indian tribes had "ate, drank and smoked together." The last toast of the evening was one pledging "fraternal peace" among the races in the Taos Valley. (From the book) Even under the most extreme conditions our pioneer ancestors kept the festive holiday spirit alive in their hearts and frontier homes. From Lewis and Clark's first Christmas in the Rockies to the generous gift that changed a widow's and her children's lives, this book shares celebrations of the Yuletide season.

    A COP ON THE TAKE!"

  • First he takes ... the oath.
  • Now look at what else he takes:
  • He takes ... it in stride when people call him pig.
  • He takes ... his lousy pay check realizing he'll never be rich.
  • He takes ... a second job sometimes to make ends meet and support his family.
  • He takes ... time to stop and talk to children.
  • He takes ... your verbal abuse while giving you a ticket you really deserved.
  • He takes ... on creeps you would be afraid to even look at.
  • He takes ... time away from his family to keep you safe.
  • He takes ... your injured child to the hospital.
  • He takes ... the graveyard shift without complaint because it's his turn.
  • He takes ... his life into his hands daily.
  • He takes ... you home when your car breaks down.
  • He takes ... time to explain why both your headlights have to work.
  • He takes ... the job no one else wants -- telling you a loved one has died.
  • He takes ... criminals to jail.
  • He takes ... in sights that would make you cry.
  • Sometimes he cries too, but he takes it anyway because someone has to.
  • He takes ... memories to bed each night that you couldn't bear for even one day.
  • He takes ... time to explain to his family why he can't make the ball game his child is in and why he has to work on the holiday when other parents are off.
  • Sometimes ... he takes a bullet.
  • And yes, occasionally ... he may take a free cup of coffee.
If he is lucky ... he takes retirement.

Then one day he pays for all he has taken ... and hopefully.., God takes him.

Written by Texas Police Officer Kendricks as a tribute to his late brother, Police Officer Rodney Kendricks who died from injuries suffered in an on-duty auto accident in Lubbock, Texas- July 2001.

FOOD FOR THOUGHT: Have you thanked a cop lately? Try it. When you see a cop in the super market, standing in line in a cafeteria, shopping at Walmart, or anywhere else. Try it. It will make the cop's day, it will certainly be a blessing to you also

Special Note: My son-in-law is a damned good cop, a wonderful father to his children, and a devoted husband to my beautiful daughter. And, YES, I also worry a great deal for his safety. It is my turn to say, "Thanks John, you're doing a great job!"

America~A Bygone Era: Historic Events
FROG LAKE MASSACRE OF 1885

The Frog Lake Massacre took place on April 2, 1885. It was part of the North West Rebellion uprising that threatened the northwest. Prior to the time of the massacre, the Canadian government was unsympathetic to the Indian and Metis problems. The buffalo, the Indian's main source of food, had disappeared, their land was rapidly being taken over by the white man, and the fur trade was no longer as profitable to them as it had been in the past. There was a lot of unrest at the time and the entire west was like a powder keg waiting to be blown up. Many of the Indian tribes had already signed Treaties and were placed on reserves but not all tribes signed and many hesitated to do so; especially the younger warriors, and a few agitators.

YES....IT'S REALLY FACT
Subject: Why do foods have high altitude cooking instructions?

Because as you go higher, the boiling temperature decreases. At sea level the boiling point of water is 212 degrees F. As a general rule, the temperature decreases by 1 degree F for every 540 feet of altitude. On top of Pike's Peak, at 14,000 feet, the boiling point of water is 187 degrees F. So pasta or potatoes cooked at sea level are seeing 25 degrees more heat than pasta or potatoes cooked on Pike's Peak. The lower heat means a longer cooking time is needed. Interestingly, pressure cookers work in the opposite direction. A pressure cooker raises the pressure, so water boils at a higher temperature. A typical pressure cooker applies 15 pounds of pressure, so the boiling point of water rises to 250 degrees F at sea level. The higher temperature means that foods take less time to cook.

Good Humor Man....The Difference Between The Liberal and Conservative....
"Debate" Over The War On Terrorism:

Question:
You're walking down a deserted street with your wife and two small children. Suddenly, a dangerous looking man with a huge knife comes screaming obscenities. In your hand is a .357 Magnum and you are an expert shot. You have mere seconds before he reaches you and your family. What do you do?

Liberal Answer:
Well, that's not enough information to answer the question! Does the man look poor or oppressed? Have I ever done anything to him that is inspiring him to attack? Could we run away? What does my wife think? What about the kids? Could I possibly swing the gun like a club and knock the knife out of his hand? What does the law say about this situation? Is it possible he'd be happy with just killing me? Does he definitely want to kill me or would he just be content to wound me? If I were to grab his knees and hold on, could my family get away while he was stabbing me? This is all so confusing! I need to debate this with some friends for a few days to try to come to a conclusion.

Conservative Answer:
Shoot the son of a bitch! Then take your family to a baseball game, eat some hot dogs with apple pie, sing the national anthem, go to church and praise the Lord for one more day of freedom.

The Ski Lodge: Steamboat Springs Ski Resort:
Steamboat Springs, Colorado

Seven thousand feet up in the Colorado Rockies, nestled quietly below one of the largest ski mountains in North America, sits a small ranching community that serves as a constant reminder that the Old West is alive and well. Never far from its ranching roots, Steamboat remains firmly linked to a Western tradition that sets it apart from every other ski resort in the world.

Whether you’re stepping foot into a local pub, one of our charming boutiques, or stepping off the gondola, the reception is the same--warm. But the down home friendliness is only half the reason people choose to vacation here. With 142 trails, 3,668 vertical feet, and nearly 3,000 skiable acres, its six peaks are filled with world-class groomed cruisers, bumps, steeps, open meadows, legendary trees & Mavericks-North America’s longest superpipe.

Steamboat is simply known around the globe as Ski Town USA®. Its skiing heritage dates back to the early 1900s. No other town in North America has produced more winter Olympians than Steamboat Springs, a record 54 and counting. In fact, Steamboat sent more athletes to the 2002 Games than many small countries including Travis Mayer, 2002 Olympic Silver Medalist.

And long before people strapped on skis for fun, Steamboat residents in the late 1800s were using ski and snowshoes in their daily lives. In fact, Steamboat Springs recently celebrated its 100-year anniversary. You’ll be hard pressed to find another resort town that exudes this much history, heritage and character. Come see for yourself why so many people call Steamboat home.

Outdoor Tip: Series on High Altitudes
Prevention of Altitude Illnesses
Preventive Medications

* Diamox (Acetazolamide) allows you to breathe faster so that you metabolize more oxygen, thereby minimizing the symptoms caused by poor oxygenation. This is especially helpful at night when respiratory drive is decreased. Since it takes a while for Diamox to have an effect, it is advisable to start taking it 24 hours before you go to altitude and continue for at least five days at higher altitude. The recommendation of the Himalayan Rescue Association Medical Clinic is 125 mg. twice a day (morning and night). (The standard dose was 250 mg., but their research showed no difference for most people with the lower dose, although some individuals may need 250 mg.) Possible side effects include tingling of the lips and finger tips, blurring of vision, and alteration of taste. These side effects may be reduced with the 125 mg. dose. Side effects subside when the drug is stopped. Contact your physician for a prescription. Since Diamox is a sulfonamide drug, people who are allergic to sulfa drugs should not take Diamox. Diamox has also been known to cause severe allergic reactions to people with no previous history of Diamox or sulfa allergies. Frank Hubbell of SOLO recommends a trial course of the drug before going to a remote location where a severe allergic reaction could prove difficult to treat.

* Dexamethasone (a steroid) is a prescription drug that decreases brain and other swelling reversing the effects of AMS. Dosage is typically 4 mg twice a day for a few days starting with the ascent. This prevents most symptoms of altitude illness. It should be used with caution and only on the advice of a physician because of possible serious side effects. It may be combined with Diamox. No other medications have been proven valuable for preventing AMS.

ISPs bite back at Carnivore
Internet-service providers and privacy advocates are concerned about the implications of a new electronic surveillance system devised by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, with some providers vowing to resist if they are asked to install it on their networks.

The FBI system, a sophisticated combination of hardware and software the agency has dubbed Carnivore, must be connected directly to an ISP's network. Once it is connected, Carnivore has the potential to keep tabs on all of the communications on the network. The FBI has said it will use the system only with valid court orders and that Carnivore will allow it to narrowly target its investigations.

4th in a series of the money controlling men who own the banks and eventually everything!!
How to defeat the plot of the Illuminati: Part 4

A Luciferian conspiracy

The necessity for Social Credit

The prayers and sacrifices to obtain the assistance of Heaven are certainly necessary to thwart the plan of the Financiers. But a technique, a temporal means, is also necessary to thwart the plan of the Financiers. This means is the Social Credit reform, conceived by the Scottish engineer, Clifford Hugh Douglas, the only reform that the Financiers really fear, and that would put an end to their power to control all the nations. ("Social Credit" means social money - money created without debt by society, issued with new production, and withdrawn from circulation as production is consumed - instead of having a banking credit as it is the case today - money created as a debt by private banks.)

Douglas first thought that once his discovery and its implications would be brought to the attention of the governments and of those in charge of the economy, they would hasten to implement it. But Douglas soon made another discovery: the Financiers, who ruled the economy, were absolutely not interested in changing the financial system, and its flaws and consequences (wars, waste, poverty, social friction, etc.) were absolutely what they desired, and even fostered deliberately, in order to impose their solution of a one-world government. So the Financiers did everything they could to stop and silence the Social Credit idea: a conspiracy of silence in the news media, or deliberate falsification of Douglas's doctrine, in order to render it vulnerable; calumies and ridicule against the apostles of "Michael". Douglas wrote in his book Warning Democracy:

"So rapid was the progress made by the Social Credit ideas between 1919 and 1923 both in this country (Great Britain) and abroad, and so constantly did ideas derived from them appear in the pages of the press, that the interests threatened by them became considerably alarmed, and took what were, on the whole, effective steps to curtail their publicity. In this country the Institute of Bankers allocated five million pounds (then the equivalent of 24 million dollars) to combat the "subversive" ideas of ourselves and other misguided people who wished to tinker with the financial system, The large Press Associations were expressly instructed that my own name should not be mentioned in the public press, and no metropolitan newspaper in this country or the United States was allowed to give publicity, either to correspondence or to contributions bearing upon the subject. In spite of this the Canadian Parliamentary Inquiry at which I was a witness (in 1923) managed to expose on the one hand the ignorance of evec leading bankers of the fundamental problems with which they had to deal, and on the other hand the lengths to which the financial power was prepared to go to retain control of the situation.»

One must not forget to mention here that the best way that the Financiers found to stop the advancement of the Social Credit idea was the creation of political parties falsely bearing the name "Social Credit", to make people think that voting for a new party is sufficient to change the system, whereas what is needed is the education of the people (by having them subscribe to the "Michael" Journal), to force the elected representatives to serve the population, instead of serving the Financiers. Fortunately, all the so-called "Social Credit parties" are dead and buried now, but they did a lot f damage and spread confusion in the minds while they existed.

AL GORE HAS A SCREW LOOSE
DELUSIONS ARE EVIDENT
By: Dave Franklin

While the rest of the world is debating war in Iraq, Al Gore continues to debate himself -- and he's losing. Polls show that Bill Clinton's number-two man has the lead among party voters for the 2004 Democratic primaries. But of 312 members surveyed from the Democratic National Committee, only one third of them support Gore as the declining party's nominee in '04. It is entirely possible, even likely, that the other two thirds of the DNC are holding an Eleanor Roosevelt séance and chanting three words... "President Hillary Clinton, President Hillary Clinton, President Hillary Clinton".

Meanwhile, Al Gore and his loving wife Tipper are engaged in a high profile book tour in which they promote the Democrat's "two for one" book deal. How readers could miss out on an opportunity to grab up the Gore's dual literary masterpieces is unknown. But "The Spirit of Family" (pictures on how children are important in warning against leaving the water running while you brush your teeth) and "Joined at the Heart" (brilliant cultural commentary proclaiming the value of those lengthy kisses at national political conventions) don't seem to be selling well in post-9/11 America. Neither of the two books is getting anywhere on anybody's real best-seller list.

SEVEN WONDERS: Submitted by Maryann Fisher, Cleveland, Ohio
A group of students were asked to list what they thought were the present Seven Wonders of the World. Though there was some disagreement, the following got the most votes:
  • Egypt's Great Pyramids
  • Taj Mahal
  • Grand Canyon
  • Panama Canal
  • Empire State Building
  • St. Peter's Basilica
  • China's Great Wall
While gathering the votes, the teacher noted that one quiet student hadn't turned in her paper yet. So she asked the girl if she was having trouble with her list. The girl replied, "Yes, a little. I couldn't quite make up my mind because there were so many."

The teacher said, "Well, tell us what you have, and maybe! we can help." The girl hesitated, then read, "I think the Seven Wonders of the World are:

  • to touch
  • to taste
  • to see
  • to hear
She hesitated a little, and then added
  • to feel
  • to laugh
  • and to love
The room was so full of silence you could have heard a pin drop. Those things we overlook as simple and "ordinary" are truly wondrous.

A gentle reminder that the most precious things are in front of you.

Your family, your faith, your love, your good health and your friends.

TIPS FOR MEN ~ WOMEN and BABIES

GUYS: Guy Guide To The Female Vocabulary-Part Two:
"Nothing" - If you ask your lady friend what is wrong and she says "Nothing," this means something is wrong and you should be on your toes. "Nothing" usually signifies an argument that will end with her telling you, "Fine."
NOTE: Always Check with and follow the advice of your Physician!

GALS: When to get tested for Group B strep
Though the bacteria Group B streptococcus is usually benign when found in adults, it can cause a host of problems when passed along from mother to baby. Not long ago, women were tested for GBS between the 26th and 28th weeks of pregnancy. But doctors and midwives now recognize that testing between weeks 35 and 37 is better. The bacteria come and go in adult bodies, so the closer to delivery the test is performed, the better your chances of getting meaningful results. Results are usually available within 24 to 48 hours. If you're found to have GBS, you'll receive antibiotics intravenously during labor and delivery.
NOTE: Always Check with and follow the advice of your Physician!

A couple is taking a stroll in a lovely meadow when they come upon a wishing well. The woman leans over, makes a wish, and throws in a quarter. Her husband decides he wants to make a wish, too. Unfortunately, he leans over too far, falls down into the well, and drowns.

The woman stands there for a moment, shaken and transfixed; and then exclaims, "Holy shit, it WORKS!"

BEAUTY: Silver Surfer
Silver eye shadow might seem a bit, shall we say, theatrical to most ears but for the cutting edge make-up artists, it represents an exciting new choice. By using silver sparingly on the warmer skin tones that come with summer and mixing the shade with rose tone, silver communicates the kind of glamour and mystery that any good trendsetter should want to harness. Why not go for it?

LINUX SOFTWARE: XPilot 4.3.2
This is quite possibly one of the most entertaining games ever created for the Linux community. Watch out for walls as you collect better weapons, and hunt other players as they hunt you.

WINDOWS TIP: Netscape 6 Reload Page
Suppose a web page appears to hang up. Just click Stop and then click Reload. This will often open the page for you.

If you click Stop and Reload and you still have a problem, click Stop, then hold down the Shift key and click Reload. This causes Netscape 6 to reload from the original site rather than from the cache files on your computer or the cache files of a proxy.

TIP: Safely Cooling Foods
Foods that are prepared in large batches (soups and stews) are especially susceptible to harmful spoilage. It is always advisable to cool down the foods before placing them in the refrigerator. One way to do this is to add ice to your sink (with the stopper in place). Place the soup pot on the ice and add water to the sink (up about 3/4 of the side of the pan). Add ice as needed. Stir the food frequently. When chilled cover and refrigerate. Another way to quick chill is to transfer the soup or stew to a shallow baking pan (like a lasagna dish) before refrigerating. This allows a faster, safer cool down.

Cooking Websites: Recipes
Although it might be premature to call anything on the web "classic", there are several sites I keep returning to over the years. Epicurious (epicurious.com) has excellent feature articles plus the Bon Appetit and Gourmet recipe archives. The Food Network site (foodtv.com ) is a great page, especially when used with the television shows. Recipe Source (recipesource.com) is the best site to find many versions of the same recipe.

If you have a favorite recipe or a great cooking website, and you'd like to share it with our readers, you can send it to The MountainGnome. Send your specialty to my_recipe@mountaingnome.com
