Voodoo ballistics and other misconceptions still abound in blackpowder shooting. Myth 2: Shotgun primers give more velocity than musket caps, No. 11 caps, etc. — Not so. As stated above, blackpowder and its substitutes burn, and do so the same however you ignite them. It doesn’t matter. What the 209 shotgun primers do well is send a blast of fire through the tiny .028-inch hole into the breech, blowing by crud that might otherwise hinder ignition. A flintlock kept clean will ignite as well as a 209. To prove it, Sam Fadala once won a bet that he could get his flinter to go off 30 times without a misfire. He quit at 30, but could have gone on. New Traditions Mountain Rifle Released
by Drew Warden Traditions Firearms is a well-respected name when it comes to both modern and reproduction muzzleloader designs, and the company has recently announced the introduction of a new gun that should excite fans of historical firearms. Dubbed the Mountain Rifle by Traditions, the gun is based on Jacob and Samuel Hawken's classic Hawken rifles. Also known as “plains rifles,” these types of rifles featured a longer barrel and were instrumental to fur trappers and explorers during much of the 19th century. The new Traditions Mountain Rifle is chambered for .50-caliber projectiles and is available in flintlock or percussion versions. It looks very similar to “plains rifles” of that time period, even mirroring the original's rust-brown barrel finish with a more modern and corrosion-resistant Brown Cerakote finish. The rifles are equipped with a 32-inch octagonal barrel with a 1:48-inch twist, Patch Box, custom scrolled trigger guard, double set trigger, wooden ramrod, hexagonal thimbles, two tennon design and adjustable rear sight. Tips for Better Muzzleloader Hunting
Many muzzleloader seasons open during the best days of the year, and they can be your best chance at bagging a big buck. States like Tennessee, North Carolina, Virginia and Oklahoma open during the heat of the rut. Midwest powerhouses like Iowa, Illinois, Ohio and Missouri have late-season opportunities in December and January. But just because there’s a gun in your hand doesn’t mean you’re carrying a modern firearm. Follow these 12 tips to become a better muzzleloader hunter. (6): Go on an Armed Scouting Mission Many different patterns, behaviors and changes occur during deer season. Don’t be afraid to climb down and determine what the current ones are. A quick, yet unobtrusive, scouting session for fresh sign is very important to success. Scout the fringes of the property, stay out of bedding areas, and make sure you keep the wind in your favor while doing so. If muzzleloader season is already in, carry your gun and slowly still hunt. You might just get a shot during the scouting mission.
