MODERN & TRADITIONAL MUZZLELOADING
MUZZLELOADER MYTHS: By Ralph M. Lermayer
Voodoo ballistics and other misconceptions still abound in blackpowder shooting. Myth 2: New powders don’t need cleaning. — Hogwash. I don’t care what powder you shoot, conventional or substitute, put your gun away without cleaning it for more than a few days and you will be welcomed with a ruinous, rusting mess when you get to it. Blackpowder substitutes like Pyrodex buy you some time, but they still need to be cleaned. Fact: Cleaning a blackpowder rifle is messy. — Yeah, and stinky, too, but it’s much easier to get a blackpowder rifle totally clean than a centerfire. Simple water, nothing else needed, removes every trace of blackpowder fouling. Pull the plug or nipple, swab it out with water until clean, re-oil and put it up —simple and fast, but absolutely necessary. Putting Meat On The Table: Sako S20 Hunter Bolt-Action Centerfire Rifle The new Sako S20 ($1,600) purports to be the first hybrid (read: modular) rifle on the market. And the owner of an S20 can buy different aftermarket stocks (seen above) and forends to accommodate different styles of shooting the same rifle. It’s innovative. And it speaks to the needs of a modern all-around shooter, who might hunt one weekend then do a precision shoot the next. It’s a pretty slick deal. The S20 is offered in eight calibers and one action length, and a buyer can choose a hunt- or precision-specific package to begin with and add from there. One thing to note: Sako smartly added a 1913-spec Picatinny rail for scope mounting, a departure from its previous proprietary scope ring system. This means the rifle is compatible with all MIL-STD cross-slot rings, eliminating headaches some might have found in mounting scopes to Sako rifles in the past. The Rossi Wizard by M.D. Johnson Gun review of the versatile Rossi Wizard, a unique multi-gun you can change from .22LR to .243 to .50 caliber muzzleloader! Rossi’s transformer of a firearm known as the Wizard is one gun with many barrels. Overall I liked the little gun outfitted with the .22LR barrel. The Wizard was plenty accurate enough to justify carrying her into the September squirrel woods. And when you consider you get three guns (.243, .22 and .50 caliber) versus just one, all for under $500 – well, that tends to make an attractive offer even more attractive. Originating in Brazil, Rossi firearms – at least the long guns – are imported into the United States by Braztech International, LC, headquartered in Miami, Florida. In her purest form, the Wizard is a single-shot hammer gun and she doesn’t get much more complicated than that. Continued... Tips for Better Muzzleloader Hunting Many muzzleloader seasons open during the best days of the year, and they can be your best chance at bagging a big buck. States like Tennessee, North Carolina, Virginia and Oklahoma open during the heat of the rut. Midwest powerhouses like Iowa, Illinois, Ohio and Missouri have late-season opportunities in December and January. But just because there’s a gun in your hand doesn’t mean you’re carrying a modern firearm. Follow these 12 tips to become a better muzzleloader hunter. (7): Think Like a Bowhunter The extended range of a gun can make you complacent. But don’t use it as a crutch, or an excuse to be lazy. “Set up a little closer to those bedding areas,” Helin said. “Those same areas that I bowhunt are where I go to with my muzzleloader. Because I’m not shooting 200-plus yards. Sure, it’s nice to see that animal. But it doesn’t do me any good if it’s out there at 300 or 400 yards. Don’t educate them, but get in tight like you would as a bowhunter.” Funnels and pinchpoints are perfect muzzleloader spots. Oftentimes, they condense deer travel down enough that a muzzleloader can cover the entire area, but they’re generally big enough that you can still take advantage of a muzzleloader’s range.
