MODERN & TRADITIONAL MUZZLELOADING
MUZZLELOADER MYTHS: By Ralph M. Lermayer
Voodoo ballistics and other misconceptions still abound in blackpowder shooting. Myth 3: Inlines shoot farther than primitive rifles. — Nonsense. It’s all about the barrel and the bullet. A flintlock with a 1-in-28 rate of twist will shoot as fast, far and as accurately as any inline ever designed if the powder load and bullet weight are the same. A barrel is just a piece of steel with a hole in it. They all shoot the same with equivalent barrels, and it doesn’t matter how you light the powder — flint or cap, inline or sidelock. Older guns have slow twists for round balls or medium twists for conicals, and the modern inlines usually have a fast 1-in-28 twist for sabots. Putting Meat On The Table: Mossberg 500 Field/Security – 12 gauge The shotgun is the most versatile firearm; with the right ammunition it can handle almost anything. With the trusted Mossberg 500 you can not only swap munitions at will, you can change barrels too. For small game and birds, the Field/Security model comes with a 28-inch barrel that accepts interchangeable chokes. There’s also a pistol grip and an 18.5-inch cylinder bore barrel for buckshot and slugs. This gun’s weakness, however, is reach, but for an additional $214 you can get a fully rifled slug barrel with a cantilever scope mount. No, it won’t take you to 300 yards, but attach a scope and you’re lethal well past 100. $477.00 Cadillac Creedmoor: Tascosa Rolling Block Rifle by Elwood Shelton Shooting in style with Pedersoli’s Tascosa Creedmoor Rolling Block. It was one hell of a shot that September afternoon in 1874. “Old Reliable,” Col. John Bodine, stepped to the line at Creedmoor, New York, and cracked off a 1,000-yard bull’s-eye as deftly as if it were point-blank. Adding a dash of drama, some onlookers reported blood pouring from the marksman’s hand, a mishap with a libation moments before his turn. If that’s the case, we’d all like a sip of whatever he was drinking. The wound, in all likelihood, is a bit of embellishment. Undeniable about the shot, it delivered the Americans a win against the world-renown Irish team. Also indisputable was the instrument at the crack shot’s shoulder—a Remington Rolling Block Rifle. While time and technology shadow the long arm in modern-day shooters’ minds, the absurdly simple, accurate and somewhat underrated rifle remains among the most consequential single-shots of all time. It was, after all, the most used single-shot military rifle of all time. And thanks to the likes of traditional firearms manufacturers, such as Davide Pedersoli, the hair splitter soldiers on today—one might argue, even better than before. Those might seem like big words, until you get a gander at Pedersoli’s latest rendition of the rifle. An attempt at balancing form and function, the Tascosa Creedmoor Rolling Block is something special. And, after some time with a .45-70 Government model of the brand-new throwback, it’s difficult to deny the rifle looks as sharp as it shoots. Continued... Tips for Better Muzzleloader Hunting Many muzzleloader seasons open during the best days of the year, and they can be your best chance at bagging a big buck. States like Tennessee, North Carolina, Virginia and Oklahoma open during the heat of the rut. Midwest powerhouses like Iowa, Illinois, Ohio and Missouri have late-season opportunities in December and January. But just because there’s a gun in your hand doesn’t mean you’re carrying a modern firearm. Follow these 12 tips to become a better muzzleloader hunter. (8): Pack the Possibles A good hunter is a prepared hunter. Make sure your possibles bag includes powder, bullets, sabots, primers, powder measures, cleaning jags and patches. Prep a few speed-loaders for quick follow-up shots. “I have a sling on my muzzleloader,” Helin said. “There are two loops built into the shoulder pad. In those, I already have my preloads in little tubes. I have that all set with a bullet on one end and the powder on the other.” Keep everything — but especially powder, primers and sabots — inside a waterproof container or bag that fits within the possibles bag. While modern muzzleloaders aren’t as susceptible to moisture, it's still important to keep that barrel covered in rainy situations, too. “If you’re hunting in snowy or wet conditions, take a small piece of plastic and tape it around the end of the muzzle,” Helin said. PRIVACY INVASION UPDATES
ProtonMail's cooperation with Swiss authorities to out climate activist sparks outrage!
by Aaron Drapkin It was revealed this week that ProtonMail provided information yet again to the Swiss police regarding a French activist. The news is a huge blow to the company, often lauded for its attitude to privacy and its thousands of worldwide users, who are now unsure of who they should trust to keep their information safe. Why is this so controversial? The core reason this news is so troubling is that ProtonMail markets itself as a secure and privacy-preserving email service, one that is particularly unique in a global marketplace lacking secure email providers. Gmail, for instance, is not very secure at all. But If ProtonMail has started cooperating with the authorities in any country, then the service isn't anonymous as is often advertised. Admittedly, in ProtonMail's Privacy Policy, the company states that IP addresses can be logged in 'criminal cases' – but that's also part of the problem. If it's possible for ProtonMail to start logging your IP address at all, then the platform as a whole is not very anonymous. On top of this, elsewhere – such as their 2021 transparency report – it is suggested that this only pertains to extreme criminal cases. But this case seems far from the sort that a privacy-conscious person would see it fit to meddle in. A user commented last year asking for clarification on this point, to which a ProtonMail writer replied:
It's an odd situation for ProtonMail: if you're compelled by the law of the country you're in to do something for the government, you have to do it – but their reputation was built on the notion of them being an anonymous mail service, despite the surveillance law being passed in 2015.
