MODERN & TRADITIONAL MUZZLELOADING
MUZZLELOADER MYTHS: By Ralph M. Lermayer
Voodoo ballistics and other misconceptions still abound in blackpowder shooting. Myth 6: Blackpowder rifles are short-range rigs. — It depends on what you shoot and what you call short range. A well-designed .45- or .50-caliber bullet leaving any barrel at about 2,000 fps (easy in most blackpowder rifles), is a pretty decent killer out to about 200 yards. ***Those are the same stats for a .45-70. American Bison were almost wiped out with that setup and lots of muzzleloaders, too. Beyond 200 yards, bullets drop pretty quickly, about like a .30-30. I’ve taken a lot of game at the 200-yard mark with muzzleloaders. They key is an accurate rifle and the right bullet. Don’t even think of going over 75 yards with that ballistic gnome, the round ball. ***NOTE FROM MGO: 1.) Ralph M. Lermayer is totally wrong about his statement that American Bison were almost wiped out with the 45-70! Correction Ralph: American Bison were almost wiped out by disease!! 2.) Again, Ralph is talking out his ass again with the ignorant statement, "Don’t even think of going over 75 yards with that ballistic gnome, the round ball". That staement is pure garbage!! The patched round ball can effectively and efficiently put down an ELK at 150 yds or more! Like anything else, the shooter is the biggest problem. I've seen folks miss with inlines at less than 30 yds!! Putting Meat On The Table: Investarm Bridger Hawken Based on the famous Hawken Rifle that was so popular among settlers, fur traders, and mountain men (like Jim Bridger, Hugh Glass, and Jedediah Smith) in the Great Plains and Rocky Mountains during the early 1800s, the Investarm Bridger Hawken is a really cool traditional muzzleloader for hunters. The Investarm Bridger Hawken has a 28″ octagonal barrel with a 1:48″ twist rate. That rifling twist is perfect for round balls and will also stabilize some conical bullets. The Investarm Bridger Hawken is available in all sorts of configurations: .45, .50, or .54 caliber, with flintlock or percussion style ignitions, in left or right handed models, and as kits you can assemble yourself or as finished products. The Investarm Bridger Hawken Rifle is a rugged, but still attractive and very functional traditional muzzleloader that’s available at a very reasonable price point.
Give Traditional Muzzleloaders a Try by Wendy Horine Nebraska Hunter Education Coordinator Shooting in style with Pedersoli’s Tascosa Creedmoor Rolling Block. For a long time I’ve thought that somehow I ended up in the wrong century – I’ve always felt just a bit uncomfortable in today’s ever expanding culture of high-tech gadgetry. I’ve been interested in history, especially American history, for about as long as I can remember, and one of the era’s that most intrigues me is that of the American frontier and the days of the “mountain men.” Their tenacity and self-sufficiency is awe inspiring. Many of them survived for years in the wild with little more than what they could carry, and what they could hunt, with the firearm of their day – a muzzleloader. Now of course I’m not talking about today’s in-line muzzleloaders, about which I am the first to admit I have little experience, so I’ll stick with what I know about more primitive flint and caplock guns, and I’ll just give you the proverbial “tip of the iceberg” to hopefully “ignite” some interest. The muzzleloaders I’m referring to, which are often called “traditional” muzzleloaders, (also known as “smoke poles” or “boom sticks”), are pretty simple in their mechanics compared to today’s high powered firearms. They were the tools of real life men like Davy Crockett, Daniel Boone and Jim Bridger. Without them, and without proficiency with them, survival was questionable at best. Continued... Tips for Better Muzzleloader Hunting Many muzzleloader seasons open during the best days of the year, and they can be your best chance at bagging a big buck. States like Tennessee, North Carolina, Virginia and Oklahoma open during the heat of the rut. Midwest powerhouses like Iowa, Illinois, Ohio and Missouri have late-season opportunities in December and January. But just because there’s a gun in your hand doesn’t mean you’re carrying a modern firearm. Follow these 12 tips to become a better muzzleloader hunter. (9): Clear the Smoke With a muzzleloader, knowing where you hit a deer can be difficult. But you can still see where the deer goes. “There’s usually some type of air movement or wind,” Helin said. “So, you’ll know which way that smoke is going. Try to shift your field of view to the side of that as soon as you can. And it really doesn’t last that long. A lot of times, I’ll try to turn my scope down because I don’t need it at higher powers. This opens up my field of view.” Why You Should Consider Black Powder Firearms FEATURED UPCOMING RENDEZVOUS We will only feature Mountain Man Rendezvous that are scheduled for at least "3" days.
