This Thing Called Eye Relief:
By Ralph M. Lermayer Perhaps no part of a riflescope’s specifications is less understood than eye relief. Many hunters don’t have a clue what their pet scope’s eye relief is, nor do they care. As long as they can bring Ol’ Betsy to the shoulder and instantly find hair in the scope, it’s perfect. Eye relief is the distance from the rear lens your eye requires to see a full picture. The industry average for a fixed-power scope is about 3 1/2 inches. For most variables, you’ll start out about there at the lower power, and about 2 1/2 inches when you crank up to to max magnifcation. The lower number is often hidden on the spec sheets of variable scopes, with only the easy-to-live-with, higher number listed. Others provide both numbers so you know what to expect when the scope is cranked up to the highest power. Continued... Like many in our generation of hunters, I grew up on the lever-action rifle, and many hunters in northern New England still use lever rifles for hunting deer where the ranges are short and the woods are thick. Recently, a Rossi Model 92 came to my office, and it impressed me as a no-nonsense, all-weather hunting tool for the elusive whitetail in appropriate calibers—or for spending time at the range for Cowboy Action or just recreational shooting in cases like the .45 Colt-chambered rifle I tested. ,br /> Rossi offers 17 types of lever actions—large loops, blued guns, color case-hardened guns, octagon barrels, plain barrels. This particular lever action has a stainless 16-inch barrel, polished to a satin finish. The right-side loading port is a bit on the small size, and I would suggest they make this a little bigger—especially on guns chambered for the bulkier .44 caliber and larger cartridges. Continue.... It may be hard for many of you to accept that something as low key as shooting and hunting with muzzle-loaded guns could be seen as threatening to those who revel at being "Socialist-Communists". Perhaps what's shared in this TRADITIONAL MUZZLELOADER HUNTING Blog post just might open your eyes ... maybe even give you a bit of a scare. It should make you wonder just how much of an accident the release of the Covid-19 virus really was ... or was not! And yes ... there is a muzzleloading spin on this post. - Nearly 200 countries on planet Earth have a "Constitution". Only three of those "Constitutions" include a right to bear arms: Guatemala ... Mexico ... and the United States. Of these three, only the last does not include explicit restrictive conditions. Right here, before you read much further, I want to warn you that in this post, I will share some personal thoughts and feelings about the "State of the World" we now live in ... some of which are sure to anger a few of you. If that is the case, so be it ... at least if what I have to say angers a few of you, it has made you think about what's being said. Take a good look at the two photos directly above. To the vast majority of you reading this, on this website, there is a huge difference in the two rifles. The upper rifle is clearly a "Modern" bolt-action Winchester Model 70 center-fire hunting rifle. The bottom rifle is a near exact reproduction of an "Antique" circa 1840's-1850's percussion ignition half-stock muzzleloading rifle. This one being the .54 caliber Rocky Mountain Hawken rifle built by Davide Pedersoli & Co. As much as I hated the "Gun Control Act of 1968", back when it was enacted, and still enforced today, at least this "National Gun Control" effort differentiated between these two "firearms". Here in the U.S., to purchase a "Modern" firearm of any type from a federally licensed dealer, now requires a federal background check and the filing of mandatory paperwork. Except in just a small handful of states, a pre-1898 "Antique" firearm, or a modern-made muzzle-loaded firearm can be bought without any such paperwork or background check. Muzzleloaders like the one shown here can even be bought through the mail, or via internet, and it can be shipped right to your home ... In most states. I was just 18 when the 1968 Gun Control Act was signed into law, and even at that young age, I saw it for what it really was - socialism and communism rearing its ugly head in the United States. I still feel the same way today, and feel it needs to be repealed. In my opinion, it is a direct violation of the 2nd Amendment of our Constitution - "the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed." I also feel that any state or city which imposes even more harsh or strict gun control is in violation of our Constitutional Rights. Continued...

(12): Take Care of It Even though modern powders are miles ahead of the old stuff, it’s still important to take care of your gun. Don’t leave it loaded. Keep the barrel in tip-top shape for ultimate performance. “Even with today’s technology, powder is still highly caustic, and it rusts things quickly,” Helin said. “Get rid of that powder and pull the bullet.” That’s especially important in wet or damp situations.
