Don’t Skimp on Scope Mounts
By Richard Mann “Just any old rings and bases” can be the wrong choice and the weak link that fails at the most inopportune time. There you stand, rifle in one hand and a riflescope in the other. Since duct tape and baling twine are not options, how shall you bring them together? Sifting through the myriad riflescope rings and bases on the market seems more trouble than it’s worth. A friend who runs a local gun shop told me 90 percent of his customers don’t care which rings or bases he uses to mount their riflescopes. They should. There are a lot of different mounting systems, but from a practical standpoint, only two distinct types: fixed and quick-detachable. The first decision you need to make is which bests suits your needs. Because I write about rifles and riflescopes for a living, I am constantly swapping scopes for testing. The new Traditions NitroFire is a revolutionary development in muzzleloader technology. This muzzleloader uses Federal’s new FireStick system which is touted as being incredibly simple, easy, and safe to use when compared to the traditional way of loading a muzzleloader.
How does it work? Well, the muzzleloader does not have a normal breechplug. Instead, the user simply inserts the FireStick, which is basically a container with a pre-measured powder charge, in the breech. The bullet is loaded through the muzzle as normal and seated against the FireStick with a ram rod. Finally, the user must simply insert a regular 209 primer in the base of the FireStick before firing. This whole process is designed to be much easier, faster, and safer than measuring and loading a charge of loose powder or even pre-formed pellets. The FireStick contains an optimized load of powder designed specifically for use with the Federal BOR bullet, so the NitroFire is capable of outstanding accuracy. It also requires far fewer tools and accessories than other muzzleloaders. Finally, it’s also very easy to unload and clean. For all those reasons, the Traditions NitroFire is billed as the ideal choice for hunters who are just learning how to use a muzzleloader. Note: the Traditions NitroFire is a great muzzleloader, but some states do not allow hunters to use it during dedicated muzzleloader seasons. Verify that it’s legal to use in your state before purchasing.

Misconceptions: A talking head on outdoor TV puffs his chest and declares, “Man, the full moon is the worst time to hunt!” Sounds pretty good, and you buy it. Your daddy told you never to overhunt a spot, and you never doubt Pops. Stands to reason that if another hunter tromps too close to your treestand, your day is ruined, right? Uh, no, to all three of the above. Let’s change your thinking on some misguided beliefs about big deer and how to hunt them. 5.) The more acres you hunt, the better your chances. Dieter Herbert is a 27-year-old New York City carpenter who bowhunts the suburbs near his home on Long Island. Most of the tracts that Dieter hunts are 20 acres tops — big enough to hide a big deer, and small enough for one man to scout and hunt effectively. In November 2019 a huge buck with a split G-4 popped up on one of his trail cameras. Dieter scouted and tracked the beast for a year, and last Halloween he shot him. The giant net-scored 197 4/8, the new state-record typical bow kill. It’s human nature to think that the bigger the farm or woods you hunt, the better your chances of killing big deer. No, just the opposite in many cases. When you hunt a public area or a private farm or wood of 200 to 2,000 acres, you’ll have to share the land with a few to an army of other hunters. People will roam and drive all over the place and hang treestands. To a mature buck, pressure changes everything, and it takes only a few days of that fracas for him to deep-dive for cover and go nocturnal. Think about those small and likely unhunted woodlots and thickets near home that you drive past every day. If you can get sole permission to hunt 10 to 40 acres in just the right spot, you’ll be able to scout it and hunt it the way you want to, like Dieter Herbert does in the New York suburbs. I doubt you’ll shoot the next state record, but putting an arrow into a 130- to 150-inch buck is very doable.
