MODERN & TRADITIONAL MUZZLELOADING
MUZZLELOADER MYTHS: By Ralph M. Lermayer
Voodoo ballistics and other misconceptions still abound in blackpowder shooting. Myth 1: More Powder Equals More Punch — Not true, and here’s why. Nitrocellulose powder (modern gunpowder) explodes. Blackpowder burns, and does so slowly compared to modern powder. While blackpowder calibers run the gamut from 32 to 72 bore, it is the half-incher, .50 caliber, that dominates the market. Most modern .50-caliber barrels are about 24 inches long. Powder in the breech starts burning the second you ignite it, and as long as the barrel is semi-sealed with a bullet, the stuff burns thoroughly. Any powder still burning after the bullet leaves the bore burns incompletely, leaving big chunks of crud in the bore. This wasted powder does nothing for the bullet. With a 300-grain bullet in an average-length barrel, 110 and 120 grains of rifle-grade (FFg) powder is usually most efficient. That load quits burning about the time the bullet leaves the bore, which translates to the best accuracy, sharpest report and cleanest barrel. It is the perfect load for a modern .50-caliber inline rifle. Two Pyrodex Triple Seven pellets deliver just that. Pick a good bullet, use that load, and you’ll get all your rifle has to deliver with no grief. Putting Meat On The Table: Marlin 1895 Modern Hunter It’s nearly impossible to have a top hunting rifle list without having a Marlin feature, and the lever-action Marlin 1895 Modern Hunter ($979.00) brings enough stopping power to take down big game like moose and bears, and will stop the average buck right in his tracks. The 1895CB is a nine-shot version of the Model 1895 that has a vintage look and feel to it The 1895 Modern Hunter has received a lot of praise for being an excellent all-around rifle, and it was even picked by the NRA’s American Rifleman as one of the best guns of 2017. The 1895 Modern Hunter comes in a variety of different stock colors, from a modern green laminate and black design, to various vintage designs that pay homage to the rifles of the Old West. Some of the top features of the Model 1895 include:
Remembering...The H&A Underhammer Rifles by Toby Bridges The very first muzzleloader I ever shot was in the spring of 1962. I was 13 years old, and had ridden my bicycle out to a friend's family farm ... with a brand new Marlin Model 39A .22 lever-action rifle strapped across my back. I had sighted in the Weaver 4x scope on the rifle ... and I was itching to shoot a few groundhogs (Eastern woodchucks). When I got to the farm, I found the entire family, and an older family friend, hard at work remodeling the kitchen of the 100+ year old farmhouse. When I showed everyone my new "pride & joy" ... that family friend confessed he had brought along a unique small-bore muzzleloader for all to shoot, and figured that right then was likely a good time to break it out. It was one of the circa 1850's "Buggy Rifles", just like the one shown above ... built by Wm. Billinghurst in his Rochester, New York shop. The short, but heavy, .31 caliber "pistol/rifle" was topped with an original Wm. Malcolm "telescopic rifle sight" ... a.k.a. scope. We shot the rifle a couple of dozen times and it was definitely right on at 40 to 50 yards. When I asked about slipping down to a nearby creek bottom hayfield to see if I could get a shot at a groundhog ... the owner of that Billinghurst "Buggy Rifle" loaded the short muzzleloader and handed it to me, insisting ... "Use this ... it's probably been more than a hundred years since it's shot anything other than paper targets and tin cans!" Continued... Tips for Better Muzzleloader Hunting Many muzzleloader seasons open during the best days of the year, and they can be your best chance at bagging a big buck. States like Tennessee, North Carolina, Virginia and Oklahoma open during the heat of the rut. Midwest powerhouses like Iowa, Illinois, Ohio and Missouri have late-season opportunities in December and January. But just because there’s a gun in your hand doesn’t mean you’re carrying a modern firearm. Follow these 12 tips to become a better muzzleloader hunter. (5): Mark Your Ramrod Make sure the gun is unloaded, then correctly load it and put a mark on the ramrod even with the crown of the muzzle. This will tell you if the gun is correctly loaded each time. An incorrectly or double-loaded gun can be a dangerous thing. “I’ll mark the rod, so I know I’ve got that load in there tight [and correctly],” said Realtree pro staffer Art Helin. “Push that rod all the way until it hits that line.” This is also important so you don’t pack the load too tight, which can be a problem with pelleted powder. COMFORT FOOD
Why You Need to Try Black Bear Meat Now Recipe: Original Jambalaya "Enjoy this modern original Spicy Jambalaya recipe.." Colonial Food during the 17th century was quite different than what we eat today. Religious beliefs, location, and harvest played a role in what was available and how much they ate. In some cases, food was scarce and many early colonists endured possible starvation and malnutrition. As the population increased and colonies became more developed food became less of an issue and each region began to develop their own unique flavors.
