MUZZLELOADER MYTHS: By Ralph M. Lermayer
Voodoo ballistics and other misconceptions still abound in blackpowder shooting. Myth 7: Pellets are just a high-cost marketing ploy. — Blackpowder and its substitutes are pretty crude stuff. Pack in 105 grains or 96 grains instead of your 100-grain load, spill a bit during a reload, and you won’t be far out of your group. What will substantially change your point of impact is the pressure on the load. Pack it hard instead of soft when you load, and you’ll be all over the paper. It changes pressure. Remember, blackpowder burns. How tightly it’s packed influences the burn. Pellets eliminate the variation in seating pressure. Drop them in, seat the bullet on top, and you get the same ride out of the chute every time. That directly affects accuracy, so stick with pellets. ***NOTE FROM MGO: 1.) Again, Ralph is talking out his ass again with the ignorant statement above. Pellets are a very easy way to load your muzzleloader and that is all! You never know for sure if the pellets are the same measured load. And in some states pellets are forbidden during muzzleloader season. Like anything else, there is no one all being best for your muzzleloading performance....PERIOD RALPH! Putting Meat On The Table: Traditions Kentucky Rifle 
No list of the best traditional muzzleloaders for hunters would be complete without a Kentucky Rifle. With a full-length walnut stock, beautiful solid brass furniture, an octagonal 33 1/2″ rifled barrel, an authentic wooden ramrod, and a case hardened lock, this .50 caliber rifle will help you channel your inner Daniel Boone or Davy Crockett.
The Traditions Kentucky Rifle has a relatively slow 1:66″ rifling twist rate that’s best suited for patched round balls. Sabots and conical bullets probably won’t shoot very well in this muzzleloader, but then again, hunters back in the very early days of American history did just fine using patched balls in their long rifles. Though the model pictured above has a percussion ignition system, Traditions also produces this exact hunting rifle with a flintlock ignition system. Additionally, if you want the full hands on experience of assembling a muzzleloader for yourself, you can also purchase both the flintlock and percussion cap (caplock) ignition models of this rifle as kits.

If you do a little maintenance on your body, just like cleaning your hunting and fishing gear, you’ll be clawing your way out of the grave when the good Lord finally comes with that year’s permit still in hand. Starting an exercise program is not easy, that’s for sure, and finding the right combination of exercises can be even tougher, especially ones that benefit the hunter. Tips for Better Muzzleloader Hunting
Many muzzleloader seasons open during the best days of the year, and they can be your best chance at bagging a big buck. States like Tennessee, North Carolina, Virginia and Oklahoma open during the heat of the rut. Midwest powerhouses like Iowa, Illinois, Ohio and Missouri have late-season opportunities in December and January. But just because there’s a gun in your hand doesn’t mean you’re carrying a modern firearm. Follow these 12 tips to become a better muzzleloader hunter. (10): Decoys. Using a deer decoy when deer hunting can attract deer, help set up a shot, make calls and scents more effective and add another dimension of excitement. When is the best time to use deer decoys for deer hunting? The answer: Pre-rut and rut periods when bucks are on the move, fighting with each other, rounding up does and establishing their turf. In Nebraska, that usually means from late October through the firearm deer hunting season. Of all the information presented on using deer decoys, the most important one involves removing as much human odor as possible. Store a deer decoy in a large sealed bag or tub. Set it up using latex gloves. Spray the decoy frequently with odor-eliminating products. Safety is an important consideration when using a deer decoy, too. If you plan to use one during the firearm deer hunting season, wrap some blaze orange around it when carrying it to and from the field.
